El Viaje de Tina (Tina's Journey), a bilingual play for the entire family
Dallas-based Cara Mía Theatre Co. and the Laboratorio de la Máscara (Mask Laboratory) from Mexico City co-present the U.S. premiere of EL VIAJE DE TINA (TINA'S JOURNEY) about a young girl who crosses the U.S.-Mexican border with her family...and with her ancestors not far behind! By Mexican playwright Berta Hiriart, EL VIAJE DE TINA (TINA'S JOURNEY) is a bilingual play for the entire family, utilizing traditional folk masks from several states of México.
EL VIAJE DE TINA (TINA'S JOURNEY) performs at the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas, August 11-13, 2011. All performances begin at 8 p.m.
Opening Night Reception with food and beverages on Thursday, August 11 begins at 7 p.m. before the show.
EL VIAJE DE TINA (TINA'S JOURNEY) is about the struggles of a teenage girl, her family, and her deceased ancestors who hope to cross the U.S.-Mexican border before the Day of the Dead holidays. Tina takes along her land, her past and her dead ancestors, leaving a trail of flowers so that the deceased can follow her. When Tina crosses the border, her new reality (climate, language, customs and celebrations) makes her ill almost to the point of death. She believes that her past has abandoned her, but her eldest ancestor helps her understand that the coexistence of the two worlds will form part of her new identity.
EL VIAJE DE TINA (TINA'S JOURNEY) is a unique co-production between a Chicano (Mexican-American) theater company and a Mexican company, directed by General Director of Laboratorio de la Máscara, Alicia Martínez Álvarez.
This production is part of a bi-national project, US-Mexican History through Folk Masks from Michoacan, supported by the Ford Foundation through a Transnational Cultural Remittances grant from NALAC, the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture.
EL VIAJE DE TINA (TINA'S JOURNEY) is also partly funded by the Theater Program for Children and Youth through the National Coordination of Theater (INBA National Institute of Fine Arts, Mexico).
